Understanding where Plasmodium vivax malaria transmission occurs and how many people live at risk of infection is fundamental in planning control strategies and estimating disease burden. We defined risk within P. vivax endemic country territories informed by several data layers: case reporting, temperature, aridity and Duffy negativity data. We also used medical intelligence to refine risk. The resulting map allowed an estimation of 2.85 billion people at risk of P. vivax infection in 2009. The map also represents the template on which endemicity models will be developed.
